What is Oil Mill Plant?

Oil mill is also known as mechanical pressing or expeller pressing in India, is a key method for extracting oil from seeds. This process is widely used in the industry due to its efficiency and relatively low environmental impact.

The Oil Mill plant setup involves several key processes to ensure the efficient and effective extraction of oil, followed by its refining and preparation for commercial use.

Process of Oil Mill Plant in India

  • Step 1

    Seed Preparation

Cleaning: Seeds are cleaned to remove dirt, stones, and contaminants, ensuring the purity of the final oil product.

Dehulling: Outer shells are removed to reduce fiber and debris, improving extraction efficiency and oil quality.

Conditioning: Moisture content and temperature are adjusted to make seeds softer and pliable, preparing them for pressing.

Crushing/Flaking: Conditioned seeds are crushed or flaked to increase surface area, enhancing oil extraction efficiency during pressing.

  • Step 2

    Mechanical Pressing

Expeller Pressing: Seeds are fed into an expeller press, where a rotating screw applies mechanical pressure to extract the oil in a continuous process.

Oil Extraction: Mechanical pressure forces the oil through a perforated barrel, with the oilcake expelled from the other end.

Temperature Control: Heat generated during pressing is controlled to avoid degrading oil quality. In cold pressing, temperatures are kept low to preserve the oil's natural flavors and nutrients.

  • Step 3

    Oil and Cake Separation

Filtration: The crude oil extracted from the expeller press often contains residual particles and impurities. The oil is filtered through various methods, such as mesh filters or centrifugation, to remove these impurities and clarify the oil.

Oilcake Handling: The remaining oil cake or meal, which is rich in protein and fiber, is often used as animal feed or for other industrial applications. Proper handling and disposal of the oilcake are essential to maximize the efficiency of the extraction process and reduce waste.

  • Step 4

    Quality Control and Refining

Quality Check: The extracted oil undergoes quality checks to ensure it meets required standards. This includes testing for parameters such as free fatty acid content, moisture levels, and overall purity.

Optional Refining: Depending on the intended use of the oil, further refining may be conducted to enhance its quality. Refining processes such as degumming, neutralization, bleaching, and deodorization may be applied to remove impurities, improve taste, and achieve the desired oil characteristics.
