What is Fatty Acid Distillation?

Fatty acid distillation is a critical process in refining crude fatty acids obtained from splitting plants. These crude fatty acids often contain impurities like glycerides, oligomers, and oxidation products. The distillation process is designed to purify these fatty acids by separating them based on their differing vapor pressures. The result is a high-quality product with a light hue, minimal residues, and suitability for various industrial applications.

The fatty acids distilled using our technology play a vital role across various industries. They are essential for producing high-quality soaps, skincare and beauty products, and medicinal formulations, as well as being integral to the manufacturing of rubber components in the tyre industry and diverse chemical formulations.

The Fatty Acid Distillation Process

At Muez-Hest, our Fatty Acid Distillation Plants are meticulously engineered to function within specific temperature and pressure parameters, optimizing the purification process of crude fatty acids:

  • Step 1

    Temperature and Pressure Control

The distillation process is conducted at temperatures ranging from 160 to 250°C and pressures between 2 to 20 millibars. These conditions facilitate the effective removal of impurities such as glycerides, oligomers, and oxidation products, thereby enhancing the purity of the fatty acids.

  • Step 2

    Product Quality

The resulting distilled fatty acids exhibit light hues and minimal residual content, characteristics that are critical for their application in high-quality end products.

  • Step 3

    Light Ends Processing

During the distillation, volatile components, or "light ends," are subjected to cooling and condensation. These components are either channeled for further processing or appropriately discarded.

  • Step 4

    Residual Matter Utilization

The residual matter from the distillation, which may contain trace amounts of fatty acids, is either repurposed for lower-grade applications or reprocessed through re-hydrolysis and subsequent batch distillation to maximize recovery.

  • Step 5

    Fractional Distillation

Our distillation towers enable the separation of fatty acids into multiple fractions based on their distinct vapor pressures. Furthermore, low-temperature partial crystallization can be employed as an additional refining step to achieve precise fractionation.
