What is Rape Seed Oil?

Rapeseed oil is a vegetable oil derived from the seeds of the rapeseed plant (Brassica rapa) or the canola plant (a variety of rapeseed developed to have lower levels of erucic acid). It is widely used for cooking, baking, and industrial applications due to its mild flavor and high smoke point.

 

Rapeseed oil is predominantly composed of approximately 60% monounsaturated fatty acids, mainly oleic acid. It also contains around 20% polyunsaturated fatty acids, including linoleic acid (an omega-6 fatty acid) and a small amount of alpha-linolenic acid (an omega-3 fatty acid). The oil has a relatively low level of saturated fatty acids, including palmitic and stearic acids, making it a heart-healthy option. Additionally, rapeseed oil contains vitamin E, including tocopherols, which provide antioxidant benefits. This composition contributes to its stability, mild flavor, and suitability for high-heat cooking.



Steps of Rape Seed Oil Refining Plant

  • Step 1

    Degumming

    In this step, water is added to crude rapeseed oil to hydrate phospholipids (gums), which are then removed through centrifugation. This process improves the oil's clarity and reduces its viscosity by removing unwanted compounds.

  • Step 2

    Acid Gum Conditioning

    Phosphoric or citric acid is introduced to treat non-hydratable phospholipids, which are difficult to remove through water degumming alone. This ensures the efficient removal of these gums in the subsequent refining stages, improving the oil's quality.

  • Step 3

    Alkali Neutralization

    The oil is mixed with activated bleaching earth or clay, which adsorbs unwanted color pigments, metals, and oxidation products. After mixing, the oil is filtered to produce a light-colored, refined product with improved stability.

  • Step 4

    Bleaching

    Bleaching earth or activated clay is added to the oil to adsorb unwanted impurities. The oil is then filtered to achieve improved color and clarity.

  • Step 5

    Deodorization

    The oil is subjected to vacuum steam distillation, which removes free fatty acids, volatile compounds, and odor-causing substances. This process results in a high-quality, neutral-smelling oil suitable for cooking and other industrial uses.
